According to Clara, she turned 12 today.

Three years ago, Tom and I welcomed this little head of hair into the world.

Now that she's three birthdays into this life, she knew to head straight to the pile of presents this morning. None of that breakfast mumbo jumbo.

I've actually thought of Clara as a 3-year-old for some time now. I think it's because of the deep discussions we have—ones like how when Clara gets taller she'll be able to touch the ceiling, but for now she'll just wait for the ceiling to get "downer." Or like when she asks me if she can "give me a favor," and then I quickly look around the room and find a small task for her that will really help me out. I love that I can have a conversation with her—one where we're both contributing.

Our day has been low-key and pleasant. Pretty much like most other days—only it involved more presents and cake than usual. Clara was delighted to help make her cake and help add the sprinkles. We took a picnic lunch to Tom's work and ate outside in the breezy but sunny weather. Flat Stanley tagged along too.

After that, both Maren and Clara enjoyed gorgeous afternoon naps and then we had an evening of pizza and cake and ice cream with our good friend Aileen. Clara was less than impressed with her pepperoni 3. It could have something to do with the fact that she doesn't even like 'em.

When I asked her what her favorite part of the day was, she replied, "When we read books." This event actually never took place today, unless you count the one book I read to her before she napped. But Clara usually falsifies her favorite part of the day with activities that never took place. I don't know why I continue to ask about it at the close of each day. ...Pathological liar, or creative storyteller? Only time will tell.

Here's to bein' three!
